Movement In Your Family Photos

Why incorporating movement into family photos is so important!

Family photos are a fantastic way to capture memories and celebrate your sweet, super cute, ever-changing family. But the same old posed shots just aren’t as great at capturing your family dynamic. So that is why I incorporate movement into my photo sessions!

Lifestyle family photography contains more movement than traditional posing. Movement can add a sense of fun, dynamism, and authenticity to your family photos. It can also help to capture the unique personalities and relationships between your family members.

Here are a few reasons why you should consider incorporating movement into your next family photo shoot:

  • It can be more fun for everyone involved. Posed photos can be stiff and uncomfortable, especially for young children. But when you’re moving around and having fun, it’s easier to get everyone to relax and be themselves.
  • It can capture more natural and candid moments. When you’re not focused on posing for the camera, you’re more likely to capture genuine interactions and emotions between your family members.
  • It can create more dynamic and interesting photos. Static posed photos can be boring to look at, but movement can add excitement and visual interest to your photos.
  • It can help to tell a story. Movement can help to create a sense of narrative in your photos. For example, you could capture a sequence of photos of your family playing together or exploring a new place.

These are some things I like to do to incorporate movement:

  • Choosing a location that allows for movement. Avoid tight spaces or areas with a lot of clutter. Instead, choose a location with plenty of open space where your family can move around freely.
  • Play games and activities that will get your family moving. This could be anything from playing tag to running through a field of flowers. I have a whole list of age appropriate games that I come ready throw out during my photo sessions.
  • Don’t be afraid to be silly. Highlighting your lighthearted side, will definitely help everyone relax and bring out the silliest sides of your kids. This is the sweet spot, capturing true smiles and laughter through enjoyment. The best part is there are no rules, so anything goes!
  • Relax and have fun. It may take some time to get your family to relax and be themselves. But don’t give up. The more fun you’re having, the better your photos will be.

Here are a few specific ideas for lifestyle family photography prompts that incorporate movement:

  • Family Freeze Tag. Team up and chase each other around. You wouldn’t believe how many giggles are produced.
  • Walking on the Beach. Walking down the beach, path, or through a field is a great way to get everyone busy and doing something instead of looking and smiling at the camera. Sometimes its fun to incorporate silly ways of doing it, like slow motion or wiggling at you walk.
  • Twirling. This is perfect for when there are dresses in the photgraphs, and it creates great photos. I mean if you’re wearing a dress of course you’re going to twirl.
  • Tickle Fight The quickest way to laughs is a little tickle fight. Including gentle tickles on a blanket in a photo session with kiddos, or even with couples, makes faces light up immediately.

No matter the age or type of photo session, movement goes hand in hand with beautiful images of your family enjoying themselves. In addition to capturing memories that you will never forget. Inquire here to get your next family session in the books!
